The UK immigration system underwent a radical overhaul in 2008 with the introduction of five new points-based 'tiers' to replace previous immigration catergories. Employers who wish to sponsor non-EEA employees to come and work for them must now first apply for a 'licence to sponsor' which entails duties and obligations enforced by the Border Agency.
